Core vs Extended Syllabus

IGCSE Mathematics (0580) aims to build a solid mathematical foundation and provide learners with life skills and a strong base for further study. Candidates may take either the Extended or the Core Syllabus, both of which develop problem-solving, communication, and reasoning skills.

Core Syllabus

The Core Syllabus comprises Paper 1 and Paper 3. Paper 1 contains only short-answer questions (35% weighting) and Paper 3 is made up of structured questions (65% weighting). The main content is divided into 4 topics — Number, Algebra, Shape and Space, and Probability and Statistics — with Numbers (30–35%) and Shape and Space (30–35%) carrying the most weight in Core. The highest grade available for the Core Syllabus is a C.

Take time to review the Interactive Learner Guide and be aware of subtopics assessed only in the Extended syllabus — for example, Growth and Decay is only assessed in Extended.

Extended Syllabus

The Extended Syllabus comprises Paper 2 and Paper 4. Paper 2 contains only short-answer questions (35% weighting, 70 marks) and Paper 4 is made up of structured questions (65% weighting, 130 marks). The main content is divided into the same 4 topics, with Algebra (35–40%) and Shape and Space (30–35%) taking the most weight. Grades available range from A* to E.

Getting Ready Before the Exam

Read through the Interactive Learner Guide provided by Cambridge Assessment International Education to understand the syllabus and topics tested. Use the revision checklist to plan your revision accordingly.
Practice past year questions regularly. This builds familiarity with question styles and enables you to time yourself effectively.
Create mind maps or bullet-point summaries by topic. This helps you make connections between subtopics and highlights important formulae for quick reference.
Familiarise yourself with your calculator model. Know where all the key functions are before exam day.

Maximise Your Performance on Exam Day

Strategise

Read through the paper first and start with questions or topics you are confident with. This will boost your morale and ensures you have the opportunity to maximise your score before tackling harder questions.

Keep in Mind the Required Degree of Accuracy

Read the instructions on the front cover of the exam paper carefully. If the degree of accuracy is not stated in the question, round your final answer to 3 significant figures. Remember: 1 decimal place for angles, and 2 decimal places for currency.

Read the Questions Carefully

Does the question specify the degree of accuracy? Not giving your final answer to the required accuracy will cost you 1 mark.
Is it a "show" question? A "show" question requires working to demonstrate how you arrive at your answer. If the question asks you to show your answer to 2 decimal places, you must give your intermediate answer to more decimal places before rounding.
Underline or highlight command terms. Does the question require you to sketch or plot? Plotting requires graph paper; sketching can be freehand with only key points labelled.
If you see the word "hence", it typically means you must use your previous answer(s) to work out the next step.

Pay Attention to Your Working

Provide all steps in your working before arriving at your answer. Even if you make an arithmetic error, correct method marks may still be awarded.
Substitute values into formulae — just writing the formula alone does not earn marks.
Do not round intermediate answers too early. Use unrounded intermediate values or the accuracy may be lost in the final answer.

Check Your Answers

If you have time remaining, check your answers in reverse order or using a different method. For example, verify an addition by subtracting, or re-solve an equation by substituting your answer back in.
